…sometimes gets me chunks of gold:
‘It’s when you start doing things “just because” that the most fascinating things are discovered.’
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. —Bob Heinlein
The aim, if reached or not, makes great the life: Try to be Shakespeare, leave the rest to fate. —Robert Browning
On atheism:
‘Atheism disavows the possibility of a god, I think the universe has surprised us far too often to rule too much out. And at the same time, we also shouldn’t rule out a possibly incorrect understanding of terms - after all, someone with the ability to travel faster than light (or even just travel through time in more than one vector) would certainly appear to possess powers and abilities that would normally be attributed to a “god”.
This isn’t to imply pre-modern humanity is stupid either, just looking for words to convey an idea. I call this latter bit the “Noam Chomsky” theory, that language may shape thought (it’s hard to think of something you don’t have words for, after all), and if you’re compelled to convey an idea, you’re going to do it via any method possible.
So that’s really just a long-winded way of saying “are you sure asking ‘is there a god ?’ is the right starting question?” It assumes a set of axioms that may not actually be axiomatic.
And regardless of your take on the whole lot of it, you can’t deny that this guy that went by the name Jesus had some pretty good, pretty wise ideas, especially the parts that involved not being an arse to your fellow human.’

“The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it’s real because that’s how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it’s very brightly colored, and it’s very loud, and it’s fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, “Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?” And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, “Hey, don’t worry; don’t be afraid, ever. Because this is just a ride.” -Bill Hicks
