A List Apart: In Defense of Eye Candy

Longish, but a good read. Explains the concept of affordance, something I know of conceptually, but was never able to find a word for.

Also begs the question of why the default personality of mostly anything Japanese is automatically kawaii.

My guess is that the national consciousness was propelled towards this extreme end of the emotional spectrum after the horror and goriness* that was WWII. Blood, war, guts = bad. Soft, fluffy, huggable = good.

Ack. i just reduced the entire Japanese aesthetic to a pillow. or a marshmallow.

And then there’s the wonderfully minimalist, Bauhausian* Muji. How inconvenient. Damn.

Wired 15.04: Mixed Feelings

Wired’s Sunny Bains (hottie!) plays with sensory prosthetics.

“Flight became intuitive. When the plane tilted to the right, my right wrist started to vibrate — then the elbow, and then the shoulder as the bank sharpened. It was like my arm was getting deeper and deeper into something. To level off, I just moved the joystick until the buzzing stopped. I closed my eyes so I could ignore the screen.”

Best line: “…my biggest worry was that as a dark-complexioned person wearing a wide belt bristling with wires and batteries, I’d be mistaken for a suicide bomber in charming downtown Osnabrück.” I lol’d :)

also, new word. peregrination = pilgrimage.

they’re still a long way off, but a convergence with nanotech seems to be the next logical step.

"Basketball was batch!"

Annals of Innovation: How David Beats Goliath: Reporting & Essays: The New Yorker

Malcolm Gladwell writes about blonde girls playing basketball, batch processing, Lawrence of Arabia, and how underdogs win.

“Insurgents work harder than Goliath. But their other advantage is that they will do what is “socially horrifying”—they will challenge the conventions about how battles are supposed to be fought.”

haha! sounds like permission for me to carry on with my *ahem* research.

"The idea that we’re nothing more than selfish animals is an attractive philosophy to a person pulling down a few million dollars a year. It is a philosophy that negates guilt. The guilty feeling a normal person gets while visiting a Third World country is the same feeling a senior investment banker gets when they see a working class neighborhood in Birmingham or Philadelphia."
